Why Compost?
Composting diverts material from landfills.

Landfilling organics is a waste of landfill space and produces
methane, a potent green house gas. When Juneau's landfill closes our trash will need to get barged 900 miles before being landfilled.

Compost makes soils happy.

Compost is teeming with organisims that improve your garden ecosystem. Better nutrient exchange, soil structure, water holding capacity, and habitat.

Composting closes the loop.

When we use food scraps and yard debris to make the stuff that will grow our new food, we create a looped system that allows for sustainable nutrient cycling.  Wastes cease to exist because they have become resources!I

Composting is a scientific and magical process!

It's a hands on form of reycling that anyone can participate in, from start to finish, and beyond. (Can't say that about recycling your plastic bottles!)

The following comes from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (www.ilsr.org), a national nonprofit organization working to strengthen local economies, and redirect waste into local recycling, composting, and reuse industries. It is reprinted here with permission.
